Mamta Banerjee is in danger due to sudden removal of DGP of state: TMC in complaint to EC

The party said the attack was a “deep conspiracy” to kill the TMC president.

A day after the unidentified miscreants attacked West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, the Trinamool Congress on Thursday alleged in a letter to the Election Commission (EC) that the state’s DGP had been removed “at the behest of the BJP”. The minister threatened and called for an immediate investigation into the issue.

The party said, TMC President Ms. Banerjee had a “deep roots” to take her life.

“Within 24 hours of the removal of the former DGP, an attempt was made on the life of Ms. Mamta Banerjee in Nandigram this evening. She was on a campaign trail and filed her nomination this afternoon. Neither the Superintendent of Police nor the local police was present at the time of the attack to give him a protective cover, even if he was a Z Plus Protector. Only his personal security officers were with him, ”TMC’s letter said.

The Election Commission on Tuesday ordered the removal of West Bengal Director General of Police Virender following an adverse report of his special observers posted in the election ground. The TMC sought to remind the Election Commission that the state’s law and order was announced once the elections were held and the responsibility of the panel was also the protection of the Chief Minister. The party pointed out that the ADG (Law and Order), replaced by the Election Commission a few days ago, was also “abrupt and concise”.

The letter said that at the behest of the BJP, the transfer of top officials of the police administration and the state administration is being affected by severe instability.

The party has further alleged that Wednesday’s incident was not a standalone, claiming that several “anti-social elements” were mobilized from various neighboring states by the BJP in Nandigram.

Ms. Banerjee is undergoing treatment at Kolkata’s SSKM Hospital.
