Indonesia’s Sinabung volcano unleashes new eruption of hot ash

Armaan Putra, an officer of the Sinabung surveillance post, said there were no casualties from the blast.

An upheaval volcano on the island of Sumatra, Indonesia, deflected an avalanche of gas clouds flowing down its slope during the eruption on Thursday. No casualties were reported.

Mount Sinabung in northern Sumatra province was blowing air and smoke and ashes as high as 1,000 meters (3,280 ft) and clouds of hot ash traveled 3 km (1.8 mi) southeast, Indonesia’s volcanoes and geologists The threat Mittan Center said.

Armaan Putra, an officer of the Sinabung surveillance post, said there were no casualties from the blast. He said the villagers were advised to stay 5 km (3.1 mi) away from the mouth of the crater and that they should be aware of the lava crisis.

Vigilance is being maintained at the second-highest level, while sensors are closely monitoring the volcano by sensors following increased activity over the past week.

The 2,600 m (8,530 ft) mountain has been uprooted since last year. When the eruption occurred earlier this month, it was depositing volcanic material more than 5,000 meters (16,400 ft) in the sky and ash in nearby villages.

In the last few years some 30,000 people have been forced to leave homes around Sinabung. Sinabung was dormant for four centuries before it exploded in 2010, killing two people. In 2014, another explosion killed 17 people, while seven died in the 2016 explosion.

The volcano, one of two currently spreading in Indonesia, has come to life sporadically since then. Sinabung is one of more than 120 active volcanoes in Indonesia, prone to seismic upheaval due to its location on the Pacific “Ring of Fire”, an arc of volcanoes and fault lines encircling the Pacific basin.
