Karnataka on Wednesday registered the first COVID-19 case of South African tension.
It was detected in a 58-year-old male who came to Bangalore from Dubai on 1 March. He said there was institutional quarantine in Shivamogga, Health Commissioner KV Trilok Chandra told Hindu. Eight of his primary contacts have been traced and isolated. He was tested and is awaiting report.
Meanwhile, four more UK cases of tension were reported to take a total of 29 on Wednesday. The state reported a sudden increase with 760 new cases of COVID-19 taking the total to 9,56,801. Of these, 488 cases are from the Bengaluru Urban.
Genome testing
V. Nodal Officer for genomic confirmation of SARS-CoV-2 in Ravi, Karnataka Hindu A South African strain was detected in one of the samples sent to the genome testing laboratory at NIMHANS 10 days before the airport. “We detected the tension three days ago, and informed the center,” he said.
Pointing out that the UK variant is identified as a mutation of the virus, one of which is N501Y, Drs. Ravi said that the South African version is the E484K with the N501Y. “The symptoms are similar and it is contagious like the UK strain,” he said.
Meanwhile, with six deaths, the toll in the state rose to 12,379. This is in addition to 19 deaths of patients due to COVID-19 reasons.
331 persons were discharged on Wednesday, taking the total recovery to 9,36,947. Of the remaining 7,456 active patients, 115 are being monitored in the ICU. While the positivity rate for the day was 1.08%, the case fatality rate (CFR) reached 0.78%.
70,133 trials were performed in the last 24 hours, including 65,330 RT-PCR tests. With this, the total number of trials increased to 1,94,98,106.
Vaccination
Total immunization in Karnataka reached 11,34,295 on Wednesday. This includes 1,88,764 seniors above the age of 45 with co-morbidities and 31,962 persons who have been vaccinated on 1 March.
On Wednesday, 41,529 seniors over the age of 45 and 7,190 people with co-morbidities responded. Cumulatively, the Bengaluru Urban recorded the highest numbers in these categories – 71,468 and 9,0398 respectively.
A total of 4,71,219 healthcare workers and 1,70,298 frontline workers have taken the first dose of vaccination so far. 2,65,106 health workers have taken the second dose.
