The state has seen the highest single-day increase since March 5; Immunization coverage crosses 11 lakhs
Tamil Nadu on Wednesday reported an increase in fresh COVID-19 cases as 671 individuals tested positive for infection. This was the largest single-day increase in new cases since March 5, when the daily count was over 500.
In the last few days, cases are slowly increasing in several districts like Chennai, Coimbatore, Chengalpattu, Thiruvallur and Kanchipuram.
Out of 236 cases on Tuesday, the daily number of Chennai reached 275 cases, while Coimbatore and Chengalpattu recorded 63 and 53 cases respectively. Thiruvallur tested positive for 39 infections, while Kanchipuram registered 34 cases and Tiruppur registered 28 cases.
There were no new cases in Dharmapuri, while 23 districts each had less than 10 cases. The latest cases include five returns from Jharkhand, Karnataka, Kerala, Odisha and West Bengal. With this, the total reconciliation of the state stood at 8,56,917.
The number of samples tested exceeded 60,000 in the last 24 hours. A total of 65,082 samples were tested. So far, 1,80,20,932 samples have been tested. A total of 64,905 individuals were tested on Wednesday.
5 succumb to infection
The state recorded five deaths – two in Chennai and one each in Nagapattinam, Tenkasi and Tirupathur. It involved a 55-year-old woman from Tirupathur who was admitted to a private hospital on 27 February complaining of fever, cough and difficulty in breathing for two days. He died on March 9 of acute respiratory distress syndrome and COVID-19 pneumonia. Three persons aged 60 also succumbed to the infection. So far, 12,530 persons have died due to COVID-19 in the state.
In Chennai, 532 persons, including 231, were discharged after treatment. Till now, 8,40,180 persons had been discharged in the state. Active cases increased to 4,207, of which 1,915 were in Chennai.
Another 86,900 persons were vaccinated on Wednesday, surpassing the state’s total immunization coverage of 11 lakhs so far.
As 34,485 seniors, 21,950 persons aged 45 to 59 with co-morbidities, 20,439 frontline workers and 10,026 health workers were vaccinated. So far, a total of 11,25,703 people have been vaccinated in the state.
More Covishield Shots
Most of them received covishield shots. This includes 33,515 senior citizens, 21,482 persons with co-morbidities, 19,959 frontline workers and 9,516 health workers. Meanwhile, 510 healthcare workers, 480 frontline workers, 458 to 59-year-old co-morbidities and 970 people above 60 years received covaxine.
According to the daily report released by the Directorate of Public Health, so far 4,43,369 health workers, 2,83,435 frontline workers, 1,48,213 persons with co-morbidities, 2,50,686 seniors were vaccinated against COVID-19 in TN. . And preventive medicine.
