The government has postponed the merger of two telecom public sector units – BSNL and MTNL for financial reasons including high debt from MTNL.
In October 2019, the Union Cabinet gave an in-principle approval for the merger, along with a revival package of around .000 crore.
Telecom Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said in a written reply in Lok Sabha, “However, due to financial reasons including high debt of MTNL, MTNL’s merger with BSNL is postponed.”
According to government figures, BSNL’s loss for the current financial year till September 20, 2020 stood at ₹ 3,607 crore, compared to ₹ 1,220 crore for MTNL.
