Samsung has launched its first phone with an under-display camera. Dubbed the Galaxy Z Fold 3, the smartphone has a 4MP selfie camera that is placed beneath the phone’s screen. The notch or what Samsung calls the Infinity cutout is visible only when the display is sleeping. When using the device, you will get a full display to use. How Samsung has made it possible, let’s find out
Brighter screen, less energy consumption
Samsung says that it uses the company’s new under display camera technology with the new Galaxy Z Fold 3. The technology applies minimum pixels on top of the camera hole that offers an increased viewable area to the device users.
Also, Samsung is using Eco display technology that helps deliver a 29% brighter screen while consuming less energy.
As we said before, Galaxy Z Fold 3’s foldable panel still comes with Infinity-O cutout. But you can see the cutout when the display is sleeping. The noticeability also depends on factors like viewing angles and the screen’s brightness levels. Brighter the screen, the more hidden the under-display camera is.
Is the camera cut completely invisible
As also mentioned above, the camera cutout is visible, though not apparent, when viewed in a certain way. If you view a dark image on the display of Galaxy Z Fold 3, the Infinity-O cutout and the UDC sensor are clearly visible. This is technically the same thing as an AMOLED display’s pixels. AMOLED screens achieve deeper blacks by shutting off individual pixels. So, if an image around Galaxy Z Fold 3’s UDC is pitch-dark, pixels shut off making the Infinity-O cutout more noticeable.
Which other brands offer under display camera
Recently, Xiaomi launched its Mi Mix flagship phone in China which is the company’s first
commercial phone to come with a camera placed under the display. Earlier this month, Oppo showcased its latest under-screen camera technology which, it claims can be used to place the selfie camera beneath the display ‘without compromising the integrity of the screen’. ZTE has also launched ZTE Axon 20 and ZTE Axon 30 with an under-screen camera for selfies. However, Galaxy Z Fold 3 will be the first phone to come to India with an under-display camera. As all other devices have so far not launched outside China.
