Jose Mourinho sarcastically criticized Tottenham’s defensive goals after reaching 100 goals this season with a 4–1 thrust from Crystal Palace on Sunday. Gareth Bell and Harry Kane scored two each as Mourinho’s side advanced to the sixth place in the Premier League with their third successive win. Despite the notion that Mourinho has made Tottenham a boring team with his conservative tactics, the North Londoners have conceded 18 goals in all competitions in their last six matches. They are only the second club in the big-five leagues in Europe after Bayern Munich to score a century in all competitions for the post.
The opposition to Tottenham’s recent goal competition may not have been of the highest quality, but Mourinho did not talk of achieving the milestone.
Mourinho said, “I was pleased with the attitude, the feeling of scoring 100 goals in the season and the mischievous smile. We are a defensive team.”
After Bell’s opener, Tottenham were trailed by Christian Benteke in the first half stoppage-time.
But Mourinho felt the blow would add fuel to Tottenham’s fire and he proved to be right as Bale put Kane’s brace beyond doubt.
“It’s a silly feeling to say but I’m happy with the goal we have achieved. My feeling in the first 10 minutes of the first half was that if we finished 1-0 we might have even started the second half. This is how you will do it. ” said.
“We lost a bit of hunger and a desire to attack. Gareth and Harry scored some incredible goals. Harry’s first was brilliant.
“It was a good week for us. Three matches, nine points, no injuries and all coming back. We are in a positive moment.
“Next week we have an important match (against Dino Zagreb) in the Europa League and a derby against Arsenal.”
After a pathetic in the first half of the season following his return to Tottenham on loan from Real Madrid, Wales forward Bell is finally hitting his stride.
Bell has six goals in his final six matches, with Mourinho admitting that he still needs to be careful of playing time for the injured star.
Mourinho said, “All the credit goes to Gareth. I trust him and his body and feelings on him. We never want him to be on any level.”
Promoted
“It is planned to take off when the first feeling of fatigue comes. Players can cope normally and end a match.
“In his case we need to take care because we need him. At this moment he owes a lot to the team.”
