HSBC DOWN: Thousand complain of banking app and online services not working

If you’re trying and failing to check your HSBC bank statement on payday then you are not alone. The banking app and online web services appear to be having a meltdown with thousands of complaints that users can’t access these vital platforms.

The issues appear to have begun at around 8:30am and, although HSBC is currently showing no problems on its status page, the Downdetector website reveals thousands of reports across the UK. This outage tracker monitors social mentions around certain topics to detect when services go down across the world and is usually pretty accurate.

Speaking on its forum pages one HSBC user said: “Mobile app not working?” whilst another added: “Can’t log on to internet banking or use mobile app.”

Along with these reports on Downdetector, social media is also full of users having issues with HSBC’s services this morning.

One tweet said: “@HSBC are your systems down? I cannot log on to the app or online.”

And another post added: “@HSBC_UK Mobile Banking down ‘again’ on a payday for most of us! Seriously time to switch I think.”

There’s no word on what is causing the issues or when they will be fixed but it’s clearly a frustrating morning for anyone with an HSBC account.

Today’s outage comes after a number of banks, including HSBC, were hit by issues last week.

A number of the biggest brands, including Barclays, HSBC, TSB, Lloyds, Tesco Bank, and Halifax, all suffered the colossal outage that left thousands of customers unable to login to online or mobile banking.

It seems that DNS service Akamai was behind the issues, which impacted such a wide range of companies and services. Akamai provides crucial infrastructure for a number of these services and it has confirmed that it’s experiencing some problems with its service.
