The government has no proposal to release the caste census report done in 2011, the Rajya Sabha was informed on Wednesday.
Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityananda Rai said that the Socio-Economic and Caste Census (SECC) was conducted in 2011 by the Ministry of Rural Development (MoRD) and the Ministry of Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation (HUPA) in rural and urban areas. Respectively.
Mr. Rai stated that the SECC 2011 data, excluding caste data, was finalized and published by MoRD and HUPA. The Office of the Registrar General provided logistics and technical assistance in the operation of SECC-2011.
“Raw caste data has been provided to the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment (MoSJE) for classification and classification of data. As stated by MoSJE, there is no proposal to release caste figures at this stage, ”he said in a written reply.
The minister said that the government’s intention to conduct the Census 2021 was notified in the Gazette of India on March 28, 2019. The census schedule has been prepared in consultation with various stakeholders.
In the census, scheduled castes and tribes are specifically notified as Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes in accordance with the Constitution (Scheduled Castes) Order, 1950 and the Constitution (Scheduled Tribes) Order, 1950.
After independence, India decided as a policy of not counting the caste-wise population other than scheduled castes and scheduled tribes, Mr. Rai said.
