A tiger, which caused panic among local residents in the Ojhakodi, Muthiri and Makkikouli areas near Tavinhal under the North Wayanad Forest Division, was caught by a human settlement on Wednesday morning.
The tiger, aged about 10 years, had spread panic after killing the cow in the area for the last three days. The villagers are relieved by its capture.
A forest team led by North Wayanad divisional forest officer Ramesh Bishnoi laid a trap in Velaripalam on Tuesday. The animal went into the trap in the early hours of Wednesday.
The hunter was transferred to the Forest Veterinary Laboratory at Sultan Bathory on Bishanoy’s instruction.
Later, the big cat was examined by a team of veterinary experts. Sources in the department said that the animal was not fit to be released into the forest as its dog teeth had deteriorated. Sources said it was inspected to identify infection in its internal organs.
The animal is identified as a resident of Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary, which is more than half the number of tigers present in the state.
