One of the most popular mobile games, PUBG Mobile, got banned in India in 2020. But within a year, it is back in the form of Battlegrounds Mobile India. And it appears that the ban did little to reduce the ‘PUBG craze’ in India as Krafton revealed that Battlegrounds Mobile India has crossed 34 million players within a week of its launch. And the game is yet to make its way on the Apple App Store in India.
The game was officially released on July 2, 2021 and it has already seen peaks of 16 million daily active users and 2.4 million concurrent players. It is already the most popular free game on Google Play as it is available only for Android smartphone users.
PUBG Corporation, creator of Playerunknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG) and subsidiary of South Korea’s Krafton Inc launched Battlegrounds Mobile India, specifically for the Indian market, after it got banned. The game is similar with few tweaks. Ktafton ended its partnership with China-based Tencent games and set up a new company called PUBG India Pvt. Ltd to go ahead with the launch of Battlegrounds Mobile India.
“We would like to thank our users in India for their support. We are committed to bringing new and more entertaining contents to Battlegrounds Mobile India to bring greater joy to our fans and players. With Battlegrounds Mobile India as a start, Krafton hopes to grow and further develop together with India’s video gaming and esports industry,” said Wooyol Lim, Head of Battlegrounds Mobile Division at Krafton.
When compared to the popularity of PUBG Mobile, the new Battlegrounds Mobile India seems to be on the right track. The PUBG Mobile game had over 50 million downloads on Android and on average had 33 million active users before it got banned. The only game that has remotely come close to these figures is Ludo King– another very popular mobile game in India.
