The mortal remains of former President APJ Abdul Kalam’s elder brother, Mohammed Muthu Meera Lebai Maraikayar, were kept at the Mohideen Andavar Mosque in Rameswaram in the district on Monday.

He died at the age of 104. According to family members, he was leading a normal life and died due to age-related issues.

A large number of officials from political parties, service organizations, teachers and social workers from various walks of life paid last respects to the departed soul.

Family members led the procession to the mosque, where customary rituals were performed and bodies were laid to rest.

The former president’s personal secretary Ponraj, who paid tribute, recalled some incidents when Marakayar visited the Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi along with his family members.
