AGP President Atul Bora and his Assam Janata Parishad leader Lurinjyoti Gogoi also submit papers
Jail rights activist Akhil Gogoi on Monday submitted nomination papers from Gauhati Medical College Hospital (GMCH) for Sivasagar and Mariani assembly constituencies.
Mr. Gogoi is the chairman of the Razor Dal, a new regional party formed at the same time as the Assam Janata Parishad (AJP), six months ago.
An election team collected Mr. Gogoi’s papers from the hospital, where he filed his nomination to the returning officers through video-conference. He is periodically brought to the hospital from the Central Jail on the outskirts of Guwahati for investigation.
Soon after submitting his papers, Mr. Gogoi wrote a six-page letter addressed to the people of Assam, claiming that he had been taken captive by the BJP-led government since December 2019.
He said, “It is time to see the BJP [immersion]. You, the people of Assam must come forward to defeat the traitor BJP. Together, we have to oust the BJP at any cost. The Raisers party is fully prepared to teach the saffron party a lesson to sell the country in the upcoming elections.
Supporters followed
Prior to the nomination, the police shooed their supporters away from GMCH to raise anti-BJP slogans.
AJP President Lurinjyoti Gogoi also submitted his nomination from Duliajan and Naharkatiya constituencies on Monday.
“The people of Assam will give a befitting reply to the BJP government this time. My victory in both the constituencies is confirmed.
All the four constituencies contesting the presidential elections of the two regional parties are in eastern Assam, where the first phase of voting is on March 27.
‘AGP for Development’
Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) President Atul Bora also filed his nomination papers from Bokhat on Monday.
Later, at a party rally by Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, he said that no party or coalition other than the AGP-BJP did and his allies were committed to the development of Assam.
He said, ‘No government has ensured rapid development like the Sonowal government. All the Congress had pampered illegal migrants for vote bank politics at the cost of protecting Assam and its indigenous communities. It should be kept in mind.
Among others who filed their nominations on Monday were former Congress minister Ajanta Neg, who joined the BJP in December 2020.
Mr. Sonowal will file his pamphlets from Majuli, the “island” constituency, on Tuesday.
