MRTS passengers are at risk due to poor lighting on the service road

Hundreds of commuters using the Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS) stations at Taramani, Perungudi and Velachery are facing heavy hardship due to poor lighting on service roads leading to the campus.

Although commuters note that the lighting on the elevated platforms of MRTS stations has improved, complaints remain about inadequate lighting, and in some cases, the absence of streetlights on service routes leading to the stations, which is a safety measure. Risk arises.

Resident of Baby Nagar P. Srinivasan said that since the three stations are located on the periphery of the Pallikaranai marshy land and on the outskirts of busy areas, the street lights of the access road to these roads remain poor. Female passengers, in particular, were finding it difficult to use these stations during the night.

Although personnel of the Railway Protection Force and the Government Railway Police are operating the platforms on the elevated corridor, passengers complain of poor security on the ground and service routes.

They also state that there are no street lights on the unfinished service road running parallel to the tracks between Velachery and Taramani stations.

A senior Southern Railway official said that the streetlights at the Taramani and Perungudi stations were non-functional due to stagnation of suburban train services.

Regarding the absence of street lights on the service road with three railway stations on the Velachery-Taramani route, he said tenders had been called to install them, and new lights would be installed soon.
