Roma Khanna stepped down as tournament director of the FIFA Under-17 Women’s World Cup and AFC Women’s Asian Cup to be held in India in 2022 on Saturday, citing personal reasons. Khanna bid for the Under-17 World Cup in 2019, and was later appointed as the tournament director for the local organizing committee. She successfully led the bid for the AFC Women’s Asian Cup, which India is set to host in January next year.
“I would like to thank AIFF and FIFA for trusting me,” Khanna said in a statement on Saturday.
“It has been a privilege and honor to lead the tournament in India. I am proud of the work done by the local organizing committee and I am also thankful to the team that shared the same vision about promoting women’s football in India.
“2022 will be a big year for football and women’s sports in India and I can’t wait to cheer the Indian women’s teams.”
AIFF general secretary Kushal Das said that Roma contributed a lot to the development of Indian football.
“Roma has been associated with AIFF for ten years now and has worked tirelessly for the development of football in the country.
“On behalf of the AIFF and the entire football family, I would like to thank Roma for his leadership and his contribution towards Indian football which included a variety of things….”
Das said Khanna’s contribution included “establishing a club licensing system in the I-League, major venue operations campaigns in six cities during the FIFA Under-17 World Cup in 2017, successfully bidding for two women’s football tournaments and bringing them to India and Establishment.
