It is a tradition unlike any other like all others. The Masters, postponed in 2020 and played in the fall for the first time in history, returns to its familiar place on the spring sports calendar with a glimpse of normalcy.
Five months ago, Dustin Johnson accepted the first green jacket of his career under unusual COVID-19 conditions from Tiger Woods, without fans on a scattered November weekend without rain. Fans are back in August at a limited national level, but Woods is not. The 44-year-old superstar of golf is recovering from a life-threatening car accident in February and will miss his first Masters since 2017.
Johnson, ranked No. 1 in the world, entered the weekend as a co-favorite with Bryson DeChambu to win in the 88-player field. Woods has not had a dual winner in back-to-back years since Woods in 2001-02. Dechambeau, who finished T-34th in the 2020 tournament, is not ranked T-21st in August.
Jordan Spieth (+1200) also dashed the hopes of his supporters thanks to a win at the Valero Texas Open last weekend. The three-time major winner took golf by storm in 2015, capturing the Masters and US Open, but has not won much since the 2017 British Open.
John Rahm (+1200), Justin Thomas (+1200) and Rory McElroy (+1900) are expected to join other top challengers this weekend to accept a green jacket from Johnson.
