AFC Cup: After recovering from COVID-19, Sunil Chhetri will lead Bengaluru FC on April 14

Talisman India captain Sunil Chhetri has returned to action after recovering from COVID-19 and will lead Bengaluru FC in their AFC Cup preliminary stage two match on 14 April. On Thursday, the Bangalore side named the 29-man squad for the match against Nepali, a day after three COVID-19 cases were found between the Tribhuvan Army FC, players and staff. Five of the team’s reserve players were named as head coaches, with head coach Marco Pezaïuli preparing as the Blues’ first game in charge.

“The captain Sunil Chhetri will lead the team in the seventh season of continental football,” the club said in a statement, with the 36-year-old preparing to join the campaign in Goa.

Chhetri tested positive for coronavirus on March 11 and announced that he had recovered from the infection on March 28.

He missed India’s two international ties against Oman and UAE in Dubai due to the COVID-19 transition. India drew 1–1 to Oman, while they faced an embarrassing 0–6 at the hands of the United Arab Emirates.

Gabon defender Yarendu Musavu-King is the newest addition to the Blues’ foreign contingent as he joins Juan Gonzalez, Klyton Silva and Eric Pertalu’s squad for the qualifying campaign.

The club’s reserve side graduates include goalkeeper Sharon Padatil, midfielders Damayitz Lyngdoh and Muhammad Inayath and strikers Akashdeep Singh and Shivshakti Narayanan.

The match at the GMC Stadium here will be played behind closed doors due to an epidemic.

On Wednesday, the club announced that three individuals tested positive for the virus during the camp, which began April 5.
