Prime Minister Narendra Modi will intensify BJP’s campaign for the high-octane assembly elections to be held in West Bengal with a mega rally at the Brigade Parade Ground here on Sunday.
The Prime Minister’s Sunday rally is said to be the culmination of a “Parivartan Yatra” initiated by the saffron party during elections in Bengal in February this year.
A BJP leader said, “The Prime Minister will set the tone of the election campaign with a rally in the brigade grounds.”
Sunday’s rally will be the saffron party’s first major event in West Bengal after the announcement of eight phase elections in the state.
The BJP plans to make it a resounding success with a record crowd presence that has never been seen in the prestigious ground.
The BJP, which came up with the first two-phase candidate list on Friday, decided to postpone it for the brigade rally.
BJP leader Rahul Sinha said, “We have decided to release the candidate list for the brigade rally. Once it is over, we will come out with our list.”
Several senior BJP leaders will be present at the rally with Modi.
According to BJP sources, the rally may surprise some as celebrities, including Bollywood actor Mithun Chakraborty.
A senior BJP leader said, “He may be present at the rally tomorrow. Let’s see what happens.”
However, BJP national general secretary Kailash Vijayvargiya said that nothing has been discussed regarding Mr. Chakraborty’s involvement in the saffron camp.
Once considered close to the CPI (M), Mr. Chakraborty was a Rajya Sabha MP for TMC for a few years, before resigning, expressing a desire to quit politics.
The BJP is launching new campaigns ranging from social media to the streets.
Party activists have been hosting flash mobs in several places across the state for the past few weeks, including large crowds of people on busy traffic intersections and crowded areas on Sunday.
After a limited presence in a politically polarized state for decades, the BJP has emerged as the main rival to the ruling Trinamool Congress, winning 18 of the 42 Lok Sabha seats in the 2019 general elections in West Bengal, only four short of the TMC’s 22 .
With the strength of the BJP growing in the state over the years, its leaders are excited that the party will end Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s 10-year rule in the state elections.
The elections to the West Bengal Legislative Assembly will be held in eight phases starting on March 27 with voting for 30 seats.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has already pulled the blueprint of the war with the announcement of the TMC candidate list on Friday.
Ms. Banerjee, who was the head of the Trinamool Congress, announced the names of 291 candidates and left three seats for the ally Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) in Darjeeling.
Congress-Left Front-Indian Secular Front Muslim religious leader Abbas Siddiqui has joined hands to challenge the TMC as well as the BJP in the Battle of Bengal.
