IPL 2021 gets underway on Friday with a mouth-watering clash between defending champions Mumbai Indians and a star-studded Royal Challengers Bangalore. Season openers Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have two of India’s biggest players in recent times. However, both have resorted to opposite fortunes while leading their respective teams in the Indian Premier League (IPL). While Rohit Sharma has led the Mumbai outfit to a record five titles, Virat Kohli has to try his hand at the prestigious IPL trophy.
When it comes to the clash between the two teams in the IPL, the Mumbai Indians once again rule the roost. In fact, they have been ahead of the RCB in the tournament over the years.
The two teams have faced each other 27 times, with Mumbai Indians winning on 17 occasions, while RCB have won in just nine. One match ended in a match with RCB after the Super Over.
Mumbai Indians have the best win percentage (83.33) against Pune Warriors, who have beaten them five times in six matches, followed by Kolkata Knight Riders against whom MI played 27 times, winning 21 of them.
After Pune Warriors and KKR, MI’s best win percentage is against RCB – 64.81.

In the early stages of the IPL, there was little to separate the two teams, with both winning in the 2015 clash against each other in at least one match.
After 2015, Mumbai Indians have almost a monopoly of victory over RCB. In 2016 and 2017, RCB failed to win a single match, while the same happened in 2019. Since 2016, RCB have won just 2 matches (including one super over win) against MI while winning the latter eight times.

This year, there is no home rest for either team, it can swing either way. Mumbai Indians is as strong as ever, while RCB have a more balanced experience in their squad, which is already included in the star-studded line up in the IPL auction.
