“Proud to see how the team progressed”: Gary Kirsten remembers 2011 World Cup win

Recalling India’s 2011 World Cup victory, former head coach Gary Kirsten said on Friday that he was proud to see what kind of side has developed in the last ten years. Kirsten, the former South African cricketer, was the coach of Team India when the Men in Blue won the World Cup on 2 April 2011. Under Dhoni’s captaincy, India had lost just one match in a showpiece event against South Africa. India defeated arch-rivals Pakistan in the semi-finals and held a blockbuster final with Sri Lanka.

“It’s 10yrs since Team India won the @icc CWC. Definitely one of the biggest glimpses of my career. I’m proud to see how the team has evolved since that day and the players. How has the development been. Thanks @ @ Incredible for all the wonderful memories, “Kirsten tweeted.

MS Dhoni hit a strong six against Sri Lankan fast bowler Nuwan Kulasekara to win his second World Cup title at the 2011 ICC World Cup summit at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

With that monstrous six against Kulasekara, Dhoni not only gave millions of Indians a lifetime worth remembering, but also fulfilled the long dream of batting legend Sachin Tendulkar, who had never won the World Cup by that time.

Sri Lanka, led by Kumar Sangakkara, tried to win their second World Cup title after giving India a target of 275 runs.

Mahela Jayawardene scored a brilliant century, scoring 13 fours in his 103-run knock, which came off just 88 balls.

Fans got emotional after Lancer fast bowler Lasith Malinga was dismissed during the chase and upset Tendulkar, as he was 31 for 2 in the sixth over.

However, a heroic innings by Gautam Gambhir (97) with an exceptional innings by Dhoni (91 *) saved India from the blasts and saw the Men in Blue lift to the World Cup trophy after 28 years.

While Dhoni was adjudged Man of the Match, stylish all-rounder Yuvraj Singh was adjudged Player of the Tournament.
