Cody Bellinger is aware that he threw the ball outside the park on Opening Day 2021, but statistics will not show that Justin Turner misjudged the drive.

Here’s what happened: Bellinger started the drive in the third inning against Rocky with Turner at first base on the left wall at Cowers Field. Colorado fielder Rahimal Tapia threw the ball in his glove the other way, but the ball fell out and slipped over the glove. Turner, however, thought that Tapia made the catch and the ball did not pop out.
Therefore, Turner, who drove the last second base while keeping the ball in the air, turned back to the first steam. And he ran right past Belinger, who knew he had gone to the yard.

Result: Bellinger was called to pass Turner at the base, even though Turner had actually passed Bellinger. Bellinger was credited with an RBI single (Turner was homered by the rule).
This is one way to start the season.
