Former India captain Mohammad Azharuddin feels that wicket-keeper batsman Rishabh Pant can become the batsman to captain the national team in the coming years. Delhi Capital on Tuesday appointed Pant as the team’s captain for the upcoming season of the Indian Premier League (IPL). The wicketkeeper batsman will step in as captain for the 14th edition of the tournament as regular captain Shreyas Iyer injured his left shoulder during the recently concluded India-England ODI series.

Azharuddin, who has played 334 ODIs and 99 Tests for India, said on Wednesday that he would not be surprised if the selectors see Pant as an option for Indian captaincy in the near future.

Rishabh Pant has had such a brilliant few months, establishing himself in all formats. It would not be surprising if the selectors see him as the captain of the Indian team in the near future. Their attacking cricket will be good for India. In times to come, “Azharuddin tweeted.

Delhi Capitals coach Ricky Ponting also feels that captaincy will make Pant a better player. The former Australia captain also said that Pant is entitled to lead the franchise given his recent performance.

Ponting tweeted, “Rishabhpant 17 seizes his chance. It is well deserved for his recent performance and he is coming with great confidence. I am confident that the captaincy will make him an even better player.”

And today, as that dream. It is true, I feel humble. I am truly grateful, especially to the owners of our team, who considered me sufficiently competent for this role. With an amazing coaching staff, and an abundance of dexterous seniors around me, I can’t wait to do mine. All the best for the Delhi Capitals. “

Delhi Capital will begin their IPL 2021 campaign against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) on April 10 at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
