Luke Shaw has admitted that he used to show insufficient attention to Gareth Southgate and the England national team and recently understands the seriousness of representing his country.
The left-back said she used to let her conditioning go below acceptable levels and was “out of a lot of camps” during the period of private camps, which saw her spend more than two years with three lions.
After keeping in touch with Southgate and improving his club form at Manchester United, Shaw has been called for a World Cup qualifier this month and is fully accepting his second chance.
What has been said
“I have some great regrets and I cannot stop thinking about the mistakes I have made in the past, especially with England,” Shaw told reporters. “I pulled out of a lot of camps.
“Around that time, I was probably not in the best position but I think I have thought about it a lot in the last two years – it was the biggest regret.
“And yes, of course, Gareth is giving [Southgate] bottom. I tried to keep in touch with him so that he would know that things had changed.
“He said that he has chosen me on merit and how I am performing.
“The past is the past and hopefully now we have forgotten about him and can just focus on the future and I want to impress him.
“I think it is a great privilege and honor to play for your country and I think I have taken advantage of it many times.
“I didn’t really think about it too much, but of course now I just want to forget the mistakes I’ve made in the past and Gareth’s so that we’re focused on the future right now and obviously That’s what’s happening now. “
When do three lions play?
