48% of Chennai voters are still not on the rolls

According to the findings of a study by the District Election Office, more than 48% of the voters in 16 assembly constituencies of the city district have not registered their names in the voter list.

The city’s district election officials found that out of 1,24,824 residents in the 18-19 age group, only 64,152 have registered their names in the voter list. Many young voters are not ready for nomination. Authorities have started going to homes to convince young voters to enroll. Authorities also plan to take an initiative to increase voting among young voters in this election.

“We have started a campaign to create awareness among young voters. Officials will contact 64,152 voters for the first time and persuade them to nominate. We are conducting 34 different activities focusing on young voters. The concert at Marina Beach on Sunday at 6 am will attract young voters. Another program is also expected to focus on young voters at Nageswara Rao Park at 5 pm on Sunday evening. Another event will be held at 6 pm on Sunday evening at Anna Nagar Tower Park. In the last election, the city’s 16 assembly constituencies had more than 84,000 voters for the first time.

10 out of 34 activities are underway to create awareness among voters. Events such as e-bike rally, hostel, beach, gymnasium, stadium and public transport hub are planned this week.

An official said efforts would be made to bridge the gender gap with 82.9% of men and 81.18% of women. This week Rangoli programs have been proposed to create awareness among women voters at various places. The training of election officials started on Saturday. There were meetings with election expense observers at Ripon Buildings on Saturday.
