At least 70 MBBS students living in hostels of Osmania Medical College, Koti were suffering from food poisoning and 30 of them were admitted to Gandhi Hospital for treatment.
The students consumed food provided by a private caterer on campus. The condition of 30 medicos was stable and he was expected to be discharged on Wednesday.
Medicose started falling ill on Saturday and the college administration came to know about his condition on Sunday. Some of them developed fever and diarrhea. When his condition did not improve on Monday, he was transferred to the hospital.
Principal of the college P. Sasikala said that the students were dehydrated and, therefore, admitted to the hospital as a precaution. “We are investigating the matter. The food samples have been sent to the Institute of Preventive Medicine (IPM) for examination. Blood and feces samples are being tested in our college, ”Dr. Sasikala said.
The mess providing private caterer food is now closed. Students were asked to provide food in another private canteen.
Members of the Telangana Junior Doctors Association said that the number of students suffering from food poisoning is more than 70.
Current medical students and alumni said that the task of finding and tendering caterers is to be executed by the students. This system is followed in all medical colleges across the state. Millions of students come from poor backgrounds who cannot charge high fees.
Junior doctors and faculty said that students opt for low cost food due to financial constraints and they consume low quality food. A source said, “Ironically, the doctors making the recipe recommend people to lead healthier lifestyles, eating less quality food.” Junior doctors have requested the authorities to help in this regard.
