The government on Monday informed the Lok Sabha that currency notes of have 2,000 have not been printed in the last two years as the amount of currency notes of the highest denomination has come down.

In a written reply, Minister of State for Finance Anurag Singh Thakur said that 3,362 million notes of ₹ 2,000 denomination were in circulation on March 30, 2018, which was 3.27% and 37.26% currency currency in terms of volume and trade respectively.

As of February 26, 2021, 2,499 million pieces of 2,000 notes were in circulation, with 2.01% and 17.78% banknotes in terms of volume and value, respectively.

The government has decided to print the banknotes of a particular denomination in consultation with the RBI to maintain the desired denomination mix to facilitate the transaction demand of the public. “During the years 2019-20 and 2020-21, no indent has been placed with the press for printing of notes of ₹ 2,000 denomination,” he said.
