The active case tally crosses one million; 57 more succumb to virus; 1,509 new infections in Mumbai

Maharashtra on Thursday reported another staggering 14,317 new COVID-19 cases as the state’s active case crossed the one lakh mark to 1,06,070.

While stating that the state stands on the verge of lockdown if the case continues unabated, Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray said the government does not wish to impose one.

“I’ve said before that we are standing on the edge of a lockdown … we can still avoid it if citizens follow the criteria. There have been cases of whole families being tested positive. Therefore, I appeal to the people. I do not hesitate to test myself. We should try not to reach the peak figure that we have received in September last year. Therefore, we have to follow some restrictions if we are to follow countries like Brazil. Don’t want to see the way, ”said Mr. Thackeray.

Only 7,193 patients were discharged in the last 24 hours, the state’s recovery rate has now come down to 92.94%.

The deaths of more than 57 people raised the death toll to 52,667.

While the total case count stands at 22,66,374, the cumulative recovery stands at 21,06,400.

“A total of 1,72,13,312 laboratory samples have been tested so far, 22,66,374 (with positivity rates up to 13.17%) have returned positive with over 98,000 samples being tested in the last 24 hours,” state monitoring supervisor Dr. . Pradeep Awate said that the fatal increase in the case of the state has been 2.32%.

Pune district is witnessing steady growth, reporting an alarming spike of more than 2,800 new cases – the highest in the state in any district – to take its total cases to 4,29,973. According to data from the state health department, the death toll stood at 8,114. However, according to district officials, the active case tally exceeds the previous 15,700.

The city of Mumbai registered 1,509 new cases, with a total number of 3,38,643 of which 10,563 are active. Four plagues took the city’s toll at 11,519.

Nagpur district in Vidarbha, which comes under lockdown on 15 March, recorded a record single-day surge of over 2,100 cases, as its total cases were 1,66,848, of which 13,800 are active. With five deaths, its toll has increased to 3,557.

North Maharashtra has been witnessing increasing spikes. Nashik added about 1,000 cases to take its total tally to 1,34,434, of which 5,384 were active. A single death raised the toll to 2,085.

Neighboring Jalgaon registered more than 950 new cases and two deaths as its total cases stood at 67,244, of which 5,042 are active. Its death toll has reached 1,528.

The cases in Western Maharashtra remained relatively under control. Satara reported 150 new cases as the total tally rose to 60,303, of which 1,821 are active. Its toll increased to 1,856 due to two deaths.

Sangli registered 43 cases and no deaths as the total cases in the district rose to 51,700, of which only 671 are active.

In Kolhapur, 22 cases were reported and the total number of deaths was 50,033, out of which only 306 are active while 1,684 died.

Dr. Awatte said that currently, there were 4,80,083 people in domestic quarantine and 4,719 in institutional quarantine facilities across the state.
