A Pakistani paramilitary force was killed and 10 others were injured in an explosion of the Baloch Liberation Army announced here on Monday.
The terror attack in the crowded Orangi city of Karachi was carried out by a bomb planted on a parked motorcycle, which was detonated when a Rangers vehicle passed through the area.
The Baloch Liberation Army (BLA), an unlawfully separatist militant group, claimed responsibility for the attack, killing one soldier from the paramilitary rangers and injuring 10 others, including two rangers.
Television channels showed motorcycle wrecks and a damaged car at the blast site.
Senior police officer Suha Aziz told the media that the attack was the target of the Rangers vehicle and caused maximum damage.
“Rangers personnel were passing through the area in a vehicle when the bomb – fitted in a parked motorcycle – went off,” he said, adding that the bomb squad was called to the area.
Investigators were trying to obtain CCTV footage from the site of the blast as the Anti-Terrorism Department of Police launched an investigation.
Sindh Governor Imran Ismail described the blast as “a matter of great concern”.
In a tweet, he said that an immediate investigation into the attack was “necessary”.
In the last few years, the BLA has claimed responsibility for two major terrorist attacks, which were thwarted by the security forces.
In November 2018, three suicide bombers attacked the Chinese consulate in the Clifton area of Karachi, but were killed before security forces entered the building. Two security guards lost their lives.
In June 2020, the BLA claimed to be behind another terrorist attack on the Karachi Stock Exchange, which was also thwarted by policemen and security guards on duty, resulting in the killing of all four attackers.
Last December too, a bomb was hurled at a moving Rangers vehicle in the Gulshan-e-Iqbal area, injuring two security personnel.
